change in cuba:
Some Fidelistas and ardent supporters of the Cuban revolution will object that it is all caused by the US embargo. It is true that Washington's draconian blockade spanning more than four decades and 10 US presidents, has inflicted incalculable damage. The government estimates that since the sanctions were first imposed in the 1960s, Cuba has lost an average of $1.8bn dollars a year from exports denied, damage to production, from financial blocks on Cuban dollar accounts held with banks in third countries, and exorbitant extra shipping costs.
(...) Shortages of some medicines, and the high price of imported goods and machinery is rightly blamed on Washington's undeclared war on Cuba, but this does not account for the erratic supply of eggs, the high price of good-quality Cuban coffee in the shops, and the scarcity of fish, to name but a few home-made irritations inflicted on the good citizens of Havana.
(...) One of the revolutionary heroes of the urban underground in Santiago de Cuba 1959, Professor Jose Guzman, has expounded on the need for: "A decentralised cooperatives controlled by local communities." He has sent his research on this to party leaders.
(...) The changes that are coming are unlikely to fulfil the entrepreneurial hunger of investor groups that descend in droves on newly opened-up economies. Cuba is not eastern Europe. The Cuban objective appears to be to inject more flexibility and rationality into the existing economy, rather than capitulate to a neoliberal world.

castro on a yellow submarine:
What a feat for the British! The intelligent and tenacious people of that nation will surely not feel any sense of pride. What is most amazing is that with such an amount of money, 75 thousand doctors could be trained to care for 150 million people, assuming that the cost of training a doctor would be one-third of what it costs in the United States. You could build 3 thousand polyclinics, outfitted with sophisticated equipment, ten times what our country possesses.
(...) Since the beginning of the Revolution, Cuba has been engaged in training doctors, teachers and other professionals; with a population of less than 12 million inhabitants, today we have more Comprehensive General Medicine specialists than all the doctors in sub-Saharan Africa where the population exceeds 700 million people.
(...) We must bow our heads in awe after reading the news about the English submarine. It teaches us, among other things, about the sophisticated weapons that are needed to maintain the untenable order developed by the United States imperial system.

falwell, robertson, and fundamentalisms:
Falwell's flock didn't laugh. They nodded. He talked of "the evil men, those who deny the existence of God, thus have no authority, no code of ethics." They stared. "One hundred 42 million have died as a result of Marxist Leninism," he reported, "because men do not know the principles of truth and have been seduced by the "evil man." He smirked. "I think of Fidel Castro in Cuba. Castro is nothing but the stooge of Brezhnev, exporting revolution through Nicaragua." Thus, he warned, Satan has "come dangerously close to our borders."
(...) Falwell also opined: "the Antichrist is probably a Jewish man alive today." Anti Semitic? No way, says Falwell who backs Israel -- especially Israel's attempts to enlarge its borders.
(...) He shares his pro-Israel and anti-Semitic penchant with fellow televangelist Pat Robertson. International Jewish bankers conspire to overthrow the U.S. government, claimed Robertson in his book, The New World Order. Robertson who founded and hosts the Television Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club" accused Jews and Freemasons of plotting to use occult finance to control Christians.
(...) After all, the theological progeny of Falwell and Robertson decided recent elections. Logically their elite members populate the Bush government; political payback and ideological obeisance. For the more desperate of these zealous Christians, Bush has less than two years to deliver Armageddon and of course The Rapture. Falwell and Robertson turned out their massive and programmed flock to canvas. They turned out millions of voters to vote the way Jesus would have voted.

on terrorism (castro):
George W. Bush is undoubtedly the most genuine representative of a system of terror forced on the world by the technological, economic and political superiority of the most powerful country known to this planet.
