The situation in Malakand has affected political and social life in the division and even after the return of millions of people, the bazaars and roads are still deserted. The government claimed to have killed 2500 terrorists, but the locals said 80 per cent of those killed were innocent local people. “Extra-judicial killing is going on. The army is arresting people on the directives of a particular political party. The government has banned cultivation of maze crop on a vast land, causing loss of Rs4 billion. The total loss from the destruction of rice, wheat, vegetables, potatoes and fruit orchards has been estimated at Rs51 billion, Sirajul Haq claimed. Siraj went on to add that the government had been getting Rs40 billion from one of the best tobacco Virginia in Buner, but due to the operation, tobacco production had become nominal. He said about 631 schools, 33 colleges and 21 technical institutions in Malakand division had been destroyed. Before operation, 496 industrial units were functioning wherein thousands of people were employed, which have been shut down.
